Massey University – Food Pilot Plant and Microbrewery
Massey University has owned and operated a food pilot plant at Palmerston North since the 1960s. The plant has been an integral part of its teaching, research and development capability. In 2008 Massey replaced the pilot plant building with a state-of-the-art 700 m2 facility designed for red-line operation and adjacent to the full range of analytical, sensory, clinical nutrition and product development laboratories. Keeping the plant cutting edge, new equipment has been added including machinery to test high-pressure processing on food products.
Massey University also hosts a micro research brewery that was built in 2008 and underwent a substantial upgrade near the end of 2009. The facility is for teaching and research and is available to commercial partners for specialist brew development.
